If Virus Stagnates, Look For Rebound

If Virus Stagnates, Look For Rebound

Following a three-month skid, housing starts should gradually ramp up beginning this summer, and reach where they were pre-virus later in this year and early next year, according to comments and data from officials at Forest Economic Advisors (FEA) during a webinar hosted by FEA March 24 on the impact of the virus on the national economy and the building products industry.

U.S. housing starts could drop by 50% to an 800,000 annualized pace from the 1.6 million pace they were on before the onslaught of COVID-19, according to FEA principal Brendan Lowney. But Lowney added that “the boom has been delayed, not denied. The underlying fundamentals are strong over the next several years.”

Lowney said ultimately the U.S. housing industry will out-perform the wider economy due to favorable demographics, solid family financial health with regard to debt load and the fact that the U.S. has been “dramatically underbuilding” and too-slowly transitioning from old homes to new ones, all which were factors starting to contribute to the housing hike earlier in the year.

The degree of FEA’s forecasted dip, while severe, still sees twice the number of starts than occurred at the bottom of the Great Recession. Lowney said the depth of the immediate decline, in addition to obvious business disruptions, depends on if construction is allowed to continue during the virus attack, adding that the federal government appears to be in favor of continued construction, though individual states can rule further on it. Likewise the federal government has recognized the wood products industry as an “essential critical infrastructure workforce” in the nation’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Lowney said FEA’s forecast, while trending positive after a few months, does not show the immediate and dramatic V-shape rebound depicted in at least one other forecast.

He said FEA’s decline and upswing forecast hinges on the federal government’s fiscal response, which appears to be appropriate so far, and of course getting the virus under control.

In the meantime, according to FEA, unemployment could reach 16% in May from nearly non-existent, with the food service, recreation, accommodation and retail industries taking huge hits. GDP could experience a 12.6% decline in the second quarter, according to FEA, before turning positive in the third quarter and becoming more robust in the final quarter of the year and early next year.

Are we in a recession? “Technically, no; in reality, hell yes,” Lowney said, adding that the keys are duration—keeping it short—and government assistance to the people—substantial and quick.

Wood Products Operations Now On A Mission

Wood Products Operations Now On A Mission

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security on Thursday, March 19 identified the wood products industry as an “essential critical infrastructure workforce” in the nation’s response to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

“This designation underscores the critical role that our more than 3,500 team members play in producing high-quality wood products to aid in the construction of affordable housing, emergency shelters, and healthcare facilities across North America,” Roseburg President and CEO Grady Mulbery says. “Our industry will continue to support the supply chain of materials critical to response and recovery efforts.”

The guidance lists “workers who support the manufacture and distribution of forest products, including, but not limited to timber, paper and other wood products,” along with healthcare providers, law enforcement and public safety, and utility and transportation workers. These workers are part of the “overall federal effort to ensure the security and resilience of the nation’s critical infrastructure” during the pandemic response.

Roseburg and numerous other wood products operations have said they continue to operate manufacturing facilities and have virus-response protocols in place at their locations. They’ve also implemented increased, strategic cleaning at their sites.

RoyOMartin has published an online COVID-19 Resource Center to aid in its coronavirus communications. Users can access important information from Legacy Health & Wellness providers and tips from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).

Xylexpo 2020 Shows Promise

Xylexpo 2020 Shows Promise

The biennial Xylexpo show returns in 2020 to FieraMilano-Rho, May 26-29, in Milan, Italy, with what promises to be an exciting event!  The 2018 edition closed with 37,000 visits by 17,781 industry operators, 2.1% more than in 2016. Among them, 5,032 international visitors, 28.3% of total attendance.

330 companies have registered to exhibit at Xylexpo, covering a total net surface of 29, 000 sq. m. This year, Xylexpo will occupy three halls, so as to ensure regular visitor flows to all exhibitors, as far as possible—with one or more big players in each hall: Biesse Group and Ima Schelling in hall 1, Scm Group and Weinig Hoz-Her in hall 2, Homag Group, Felder, Cefla and Giardina Finishing in hall 3.

In addition to the exhibitions, the show will also present the fourth annual Xylexpo Awards, assigned by a committee of members from academia and research. Awards will be presented in three categories: “Wood and Panel Processing” (including tools), “Finishing and Coating” (equipment and materials) and for the first time “IoT” (industrial process management).

The Xylexpo Arena will host a few important conferences and a number of meetings, events and initiatives. Three of those conferences that will be the core of the agenda: on Wednesday, May 27, are the second edition of the technical seminar “Next wood, designing future surfaces together” organized by Catas, Poliefun-Politecnico di Milano, Anver and Acimall, is dedicated to the response of coating and plant manufacturers to the increasingly tough challenge of coating materials. On Thursday, May 28, Xylexpo will sponsor the event “Adhesives in the furniture industry and current product and process developments,” created by Catas and Federchimica. Topics will include the application of veneer in compliance with new German formaldehyde regulations, the use of hotmelt glues for the application of glossy coatings, the use of polyurethane glues with low free isocyanate content and new water-resistant vinyl glues. On Friday, May 29, the discussion will focus on VOCs, volatile organic compounds, a source of indoor pollution, starting from the stricter and stricter regulations on formaldehyde emissions that, unfortunately, are not shared and coordinated on a global scale, forcing producers and processors to very complicated management practices.
