Roy Martin III Paints Refreshing, Positive Picture

On March 20, 2020, RoyOMartin Chairman, CEO and CFO Roy O. Martin III provided a state-of-the-business message on the company’s COVID-19 response and company operations moving forward to employees and stakeholders.

Martin hammered home the company’s absolute commitment to the safety and well being of its employees during the three and a half minute long address.

A portion of his remarks: “Hello everyone. I trust those watching this are well and taking the necessary precautions to protect yourself and your loved ones from illness through washing your hands, social distancing and other means. Aren’t you glad though, that during this pandemic that your job is in manufacturing? We’ve seen an unprecedented shut down of our service industries throughout the country, and the world. Airlines, cruise lines, movies, restaurants, even exercise facilities are shut down. Your job is in manufacturing. Our order files are full. Our production is good. Our harvesting operations are normal. And we’ve got great prices right now. So, the housing industry is going strong. It is not a service industry; it is a construction industry and that will persevere through this pandemic. I want to assure you that RoyOMartin is still in business, even though the world as we know it has turned upside down. We will persevere through this coronavirus pandemic.

“Your health, safety and well-being is our top priority. We’ve been making a number of changes to our operations to accommodate our new normal. You’ve probably noticed fewer team meetings, limited visitor access, and increased distancing throughout all of our plants. You’ve also noticed that our safety meetings have been suspended at this time and more one-on-one safety talks. That does not mean that your safety switch should be turned off. In fact, right now, with the distancing, we need to be more aware of our surroundings because our team members are farther away. Do not ever sacrifice safety for production. We want to increase our housekeeping throughout our facilities. Our leaders, our occupational health nurses and our Legacy Health & Wellness staff are well-equipped to listen to your concerns and help you with any personal health issues. We want to make things as normal as possible for you when you’re at work. That includes maintaining production and other operations at appropriate levels so you can count on your paycheck. In fact, we’re still hiring. With all of us banded together, we will get through this…Thank you and God bless.”

Wood Products Operations Now On A Mission

 

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security on Thursday, March 19 identified the wood products industry as an “essential critical infrastructure workforce” in the nation’s response to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

“This designation underscores the critical role that our more than 3,500 team members play in producing high-quality wood products to aid in the construction of affordable housing, emergency shelters, and healthcare facilities across North America,” Roseburg President and CEO Grady Mulbery says. “Our industry will continue to support the supply chain of materials critical to response and recovery efforts.”

The guidance lists “workers who support the manufacture and distribution of forest products, including, but not limited to timber, paper and other wood products,” along with healthcare providers, law enforcement and public safety, and utility and transportation workers. These workers are part of the “overall federal effort to ensure the security and resilience of the nation’s critical infrastructure” during the pandemic response.

Roseburg and numerous other wood products operations have said they continue to operate manufacturing facilities and have virus-response protocols in place at their locations. They’ve also implemented increased, strategic cleaning at their sites.

RoyOMartin has published an online COVID-19 Resource Center to aid in its coronavirus communications. Users can access important information from Legacy Health & Wellness providers and tips from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).

Eighty equipment exhibitors and 34 speakers were on site at the seventh Panel & Engineered Lumber International Conference & Expo held March 12-13 at the Omni Hotel at CNN Center in Atlanta, Georgia. Total on-site attendance, including exhibitor personnel, speakers, producer personnel, consultants and academia, was 287. Fifteen producer companies sent personnel.

The event featured one of its best lineup of keynote speakers ever. Ashlee Cribb, senior VP-Chief Commercial Officer, Roseburg Forest Products, spoke on “Growth through Investment and Innovation.” Steve Carroll, VP of Operations for Arauco NA, addressed “Arauco Grayling: Building a Future.” Mark Lindquist, VP-Operations for Huber Engineered Woods, spoke on “Huber Engineered Woods Spring City Plant Restart.” Terry Secrest, Executive VP of Manufacturing and Product Sales, RoyOMartin, addressed “The RoyOMartin Journey to a World Class Safety Culture.” Jerry Uhland, CEO, CalPlantI, spoke on “20 Years, 8 Months and 17 Days, But Who’s Counting, the Story of the World’s First Rice-Straw Based MDF Plant.”

In Depth: U.S. Lumber And Structural Panel Trends

With housing starts growing in both single-family and multifamily categories, lumber suppliers are looking to advance their product lines beyond the commodity mindset to help builders resolve more challenges. They also point to the many intangibles provided by suppliers that provide values beyond the initial price when considering options for dimensional lumber, OSB, plywood and structural panels.

“The trend we’re seeing with OSB panels is a move to enhance products in different ways,” says George Hendry, market development manager at Weyerhaeuser. “Builders are struggling with reduced levels of skilled labor, so they’re looking at enhanced panels to help them find ways to make products easier and faster to install. They want attributes that will enhance performance in the field.”

Adds Ray Peters, vice president of marketing at RoyOMartin, “Our new products are aimed at finding ways to decommoditize OSB and excel at all three factors that drive purchase decisions: price, quality and delivery. We want to stand out in that equation.”

Reducing processes and steps for installation has become a priority as builders face new challenges. “One headwind we face today is the shortage of skilled labor in many markets,” says Mary Jo Nyblad, commodity sales and marketing director at Boise Cascade. “Finding, training and retaining qualified employees at all levels of our industry will continue to be a challenge. We as an industry have done a poor job of marketing ourselves. We’re a well-kept secret, especially for young people. It’s a big blind spot.”

A prime focus for adding value has been protecting panels against moisture during the construction process and afterward, helping overcome issues with less efficient crews and eliminating the need for adding housewrap in a separate step. “Products that provide wet-weather protection are popular, as are those that need less sanding and prep time for framers and floor installers,” notes Weyerhaeuser’s Hendry.
