Murphy Co. Puts Foster Veneer Mill In Motion

Article by Dan Shell, Senior Editor, Panel World

FOSTER, Oregon – Smart investments and key upgrades have Murphy Company’s veneer plant producing better quality veneer, more efficiently. The facility is a key regional producer and merchandiser of laminated veneer lumber (LVL) and plywood veneers. The Foster Veneer mill supplies Murphy plywood and LVL manufacturing facilities and other regional EWP producers as a major source of strength-graded veneer.

Acquired in late 2017 from Weyerhaeuser, the plant is a complementary fit to Murphy Company’s vertically integrated manufacturing facilities. The six facilities include three veneer mills supporting a LVL plant and two plywood mills producing a full complement of hardwood and softwood plywood. According to Mike Don, Murphy General Manager, Veneer Operations, the Foster plant is strategically located in the heart of the greater West Coast veneer market that stretches from northern California to British Columbia.

The key component of the business plan for Foster Veneer is to function as a major regional veneer merchandising operation, Don says. “Out peeling and drying operations are targeted to supply the engineered wood products industry, while at the same time merchandising each piece of veneer to its highest end value.”

He adds that while the facility has a range of capabilities, and produces a variety of veneers, the focus is primarily Douglas fir 1/8 in. LVL-quality, strength-graded veneer. As an added bonus, the wood basket for their operation is on the west slope of the Cascades, known for its high-strength Douglas fir resource.

According to Don, the plant has received significant investment since being acquired by Murphy. These investments have not necessarily been changes to the process, but rather in upgrading the existing equipment and making sure it functions to its full potential. “The story here is more about sticking with the fundamentals, getting everything up to operating order, and optimizing the performance of what we have,” he says.

TAKING STOCK: Dear Fred, From Kenneth

While reading a draft of this issue’s cover story on Roseburg’s new LVL plant in Chester, SC, representing Roseburg’s first ever greenfield project in the south, I glanced at the letter that I’ve always kept on the bulletin board up and behind my iMac monitor. The bulletin board is mostly tacked with editorial planning and editorial style information, but this letter always appealed to me and I put it up there instead of filing it away into neverland.

Producers Navigated Changing OSB Market Dynamics During Past Two Years

During the past two years, North America’s OSB producers have rallied through a worldwide health crisis and record-setting structural panel prices after a brief pandemic-induced market downturn. Initial uncertainties surrounding the novel coronavirus compelled some companies to temporarily reduce OSB production and capital expenditures. Almost simultaneously, one of the biggest surprises was a surge in remodeling and DIY markets as more consumers had more money and more time on their hands at home.

Ingenuity, Innovation Within The Veneer-Based Industry: A Report From The Field

Ingenuity and innovation have been the lifeblood of the veneer-based industry since its inception more than 100 years ago. However, during recent decades the competitive matching of costs and features with competing products has slowed. Substitutes, such as oriented strandboard (OSB) and other wood and non-wood materials, have significantly reduced North American demand for plywood.

Roseburg Picks Up LVL Pace At Chester

Article by Jessica Johnson, Senior Associate Editor, Panel World

CHESTER, South Carolina – Despite a few technical glitches during startup, and while muscling through a global pandemic, Chester Engineered Wood is a go for Roseburg.

The industry looked on as Roseburg built its greenfield southern yellow pine (SYP) laminated veneer lumber (LVL) mill in South Carolina – the company’s first greenfield project in the U.S. South, though having acquired several panel plants in the South through the years and maintaining operations in Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi. Nestled not far from major cities in the Carolinas – Charlotte is just 40 miles away, and Columbia, SC is 60 miles – Chester, SC is positioned well to serve the bustling metro areas that are seeing housing starts shoot through the roof.

Chester Engineered Wood came online at the onslaught of the pandemic, which, combined with the unique challenges that a startup presents, made for an interesting time. Plant manager Mike Henry, who was at another Roseburg facility in the South before coming to Chester, says the extra challenges put additional pressure on a lot of people, but in the end, being creative and liking to solve problems, Henry and his management team hit the quality production the company was aiming for when the facility was constructed – it just took longer than expected to get there.

New Dryer Line Broadens Hardel

Article by Dan Shell, Senior Editor, Panel World

CHEHALIS, Washington – Working through a new dryer installation in 2020 was “perfect timing,” says Hardel Mutual Plywood General Manager Emanouel Piliaris, after the company started up a new USNR unit at the tail end of the spring 2020 COVID pandemic slowdown, and had the new machine ready to roll as the slowdown turned into some of the hottest forest products markets in history.

The new dryer creates additional in-house capacity for Hardel, one of the biggest plywood producers on the West Coast, with 164 press openings. In addition, the facility has more control of its manufacturing processes and is less reliant on dry veneer purchased on the open market.

According to Piliaris, plant officials were looking to enlarge and upgrade its dryer capabilities to avoid having to buy as much dry veneer – sometimes up to 30% of incoming raw material – because in addition to overall quality and consistency concerns, dry veneer brings with it storage issues and also is more expensive and harder to source in the winter months.

Installed in spring 2020, the dryer started up in May last year and was running up to speed when prices and demand took off, reaching unprecedented highs this past summer. Piliaris remembers low order files and production in April and May. “Things picked up in June, then went through the roof,” he remembers with a smile. “And the dryer? What timing! We were very pleased with it.”

New 10 Ft. Lathe Line At TPC-Yreka Veneer Plant: Better Quality, More Wide Sheets

Article by Dan Shell, Senior Editor, Panel World

YREKA, California – Watching the new Meinan 10 ft. lathe system in action at Timber Products Co.’s (TPC’s) northern California veneer plant, TPC California Operations Manager Chris Chase says he believes it’s “the most versatile lathe in America.” With the ability to peel 8, 9 and 10 ft. blocks, and handle logs from 6 in. to 40 in. while peeling a variety of species, the new lathe is making a strong case for its versatility since it went into full production early this year after starting up in late December 2020.

The primary drivers for the new lathe project were to increase the quality of veneer produced in terms of smoothness and thickness consistency and also to better align veneer production with demand from TPC’s two southern Oregon plywood plants.

Swiss Krono Bets Its Chips On Barnwell

Article by Jessica Johnson, Senior Associate Editor, Panel World

BARNWELL, South Carolina – For German-born Wedig Graf Grote, COO of Swiss Krono USA, who cut his teeth after university studies on the Swiss Krono plants in Eastern Europe, working to build a $230 million, 280,000 m3 production capacity MDF plant in South Carolina was supposed to be a fun challenge. Educated in wood science technology, Graf Grote understands not only what needs to be inside the board, but also how to produce it thanks to his years at the other plants and in a centralized function at the Swiss Krono Group’s headquarters. And while all of that experience serves him well in his daily functions, none of that experience could prepare him for startup and commissioning during a global pandemic while navigating a fairly wide cultural gap.

A lot had already happened at the 350 acre Barnwell site, dating back to 2005 when under the guidance of former CEO Norm Voss, Kronotex (as the Switzerland-based company and one of the world’s leading engineered wood production companies was then called) went from a distribution facility to a laminate and flooring plank producer. By 2014 the Barnwell operation had grown to include three flooring profiling lines and three short cycle press laminating lines along with two impregnation/paper treating lines.

After Graf Grote arrived in South Carolina in 2014, what was called “the small project on the other side of the building” was made bigger. Graf Grote recalls, “We had applied for a smaller version MDF plant, and then decided if we are already investing, let’s go ahead and do it bigger.”
