Raute Gains Panel Repair Orders

Raute’s latest panel repairing solutions have resulted in orders for panel repair stations and a panel repairing line to be delivered to two customers in North America. The ordered machinery and equipment will be delivered by the end of 2021.

The equipment will be engineered and manufactured mainly in Raute’s production unit in Nastola, Finland. Some work will also take place in Raute’s unit in Vancouver, Can. The machine vision technology for controlling panel repairing will be delivered from Raute’s unit in Kajaani, Finland.

The orders come following Raute’s launch of a new panel repair station and next-generation panel repairing line. Automatic panel repairing increases the cost efficiency of plywood production, ensuring that the final quality of the panels is more uniform and makes it easier to control the various panel grades, according to Raute.

“We have developed and launched new panel repairing solutions to respond to the needs of various customers in the plywood industry,” says Tapani Kiiski, President and CEO of Raute Corp. “Our latest products are an excellent continuation of Raute’s panel repairing technology offering, and they represent a breakthrough in new technology.

“Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we launched one product virtually just a few months ago. In connection with the launch of our panel repairing solutions, we received nearly simultaneous orders from two customers in North America.”

ARAUCO held a ribbon-cutting ceremony April 16, 2019 at its new particleboard and lamination facility in Grayling, Mich. Executives from ARAUCO, ARAUCO North America, as well as customers and public officials from Chile and the state of Michigan attended the ceremony, which also included a plant tour. The Grayling mill represents a $450 million investment toward supporting ARAUCO’s North American customer base and increasing the company’s ability to meet the furniture manufacturing industry in the U.S. Midwest market area and beyond.

The 820,000 sq. ft. operation is the company’s first greenfield facility in the U.S., its 11th North America manufacturing site and the largest of its kind globally. The operation is designed to be one of the most productive in the world and houses North America’s highest-capacity, single-line particleboard press, two thermally infused laminating (TFL) lines and a large stocking warehouse for just-in-time service delivery. The plant currently staffs more than 200 full-time employees and has generated 700 additional jobs in related supplier and logistics industries since construction commenced in spring 2017.

“This is a historic day and milestone for our company,” said Matías Domeyko, CEO, ARAUCO. “The official start of production at Grayling exemplifies the outstanding innovation and sustained growth ARAUCO is known for globally, and what has been central to propelling our positive business results. The Grayling mill achievement also is the culmination of unwavering commitment from our valued investor who shared our vision for capturing significant market opportunity in North America.”

Kelly Shotbolt, President of ARAUCO North America, acknowledged the significant contributions of the Grayling project managers, and praised state of Michigan officials and local Crawford County representatives for creating an environment conducive to undertaking such a large-scale business endeavor.

“We are grateful for the incredible support received both from Grayling community leaders and the state of Michigan. It has been vital to enabling ARAUCO to renew our industry in North America through what is arguably the most advanced, automated and large-scale facility of its kind anywhere in the world,” Shotbolt said. “While known for automobile manufacturing, Michigan also is the office furniture capital of the world. We are pleased to substantially expand our production capacity to assure a strong, sustainable supply of quality, raw and finished product for this growing region.”

With an annual production capacity of 452MMSF, the Grayling plant will soon produce the full breadth of the company’s high-quality raw particleboard in a variety of thicknesses, as well as ARAUCO’s PRISM TFL collection.

Engineered Wood Market To Reach $41.3 Billion Globally By 2022

A new report from market research firm Allied Market Research (AMR) projects that the global engineered wood market is estimated to reach $41.273 billion by 2022, growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 24.8 percent from 2016 – 2022. North America and Europe, being the developed markets, account for nearly 70 percent of global engineered wood production, while still maintaining high CAGRs.

Engineered wood demand is expected to remain high during the forecast period as it is an alternative to concrete and hardwood. Engineered wood products are widely used by architects, builders, code officials, and building designers aware of energy-efficient framing practices that conserve energy, speed-up construction, cut labor cost, and reduce waste.

“The rising popularity of engineered wood over hardwood is attributable to its cost-effectiveness and eco-friendly aspect,” says AMR research analyst Yogiata Sharma. “Also, stringent regulations with regards CO2 emission and rapid deforestation are factors likely to propel the adoption of engineered wood. Despite the reservations, surrounding its usage due to safety concerns, composite wood has proved to be a huge commercial success.”

The market is expected to move at a higher pace in Europe and North America, owing to high disposable income and widespread awareness of the benefits of engineered wood among the populace. The engineered wood industry in Europe will be driven by the rise in demand for engineered timber, substantial use of resources, and increased import of raw wood from Asia-Pacific and LAMEA.

Structural Panel Numbers Go Up

While housing starts in the U.S. ran at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.17 million units in the second quarter, and Canadian housing starts ran at 198,000 units, North American structural panel production and apparent consumption rose 6% and 6.6%, respectively, in the second quarter compared to the first quarter. Relative to the second quarter of 2015, North American structural panel production was up 6.5%, and consumption increased 8.1%, according to data reported by APA—The Engineered Wood Assn.

Compared to the first quarter of 2016, North American glulam production rose 4.7% in the second quarter. I-joist production increased 4.1% and LVL output rose 3.9%. On a year ago quarter basis, glulam production was up 6.7%, while I-joist and LVL production increased 4.5% and 9.4%, respectively.

OSB production in North America increased 6.5% in the second quarter versus the first quarter, and was up 7.8% from the second quarter of 2015. First half production totaled 10.775 billion SF, up 7.5% from the first half of 2015.

North American plywood production was up 4.9% in the second quarter versus the first quarter, and was up 3.9% from the
second quarter of 2015. Plywood production in the first half of 2016 was 1.2% greater than the first half of 2015. Led by a 7.4% increase in the South, U.S. plywood production jumped 5% in the second quarter versus the first quarter, and was up 4.6% from the second quarter of 2015. Canadian production increased 4.9% in the second quarter, and was up 0.6% from the second quarter of 2015.

Tall Wood Building Committee Will Work On 2021 Global Building Codes

The American Wood Council says the International Code Council (ICC) Board of Directors approval of the formation of a Tall Wood Building Ad Hoc Committee.

The committee will be made up of stakeholders, code officials and other interested parties. The committee will study tall wood construction and may develop code changes to be submitted for the 2021 International Building Code. Tall wood is an industry term to identify the use of cross laminated timber (CLT) and other heavy timber manufactured wood products in building heights greater than six stories.

“Other nations have already seen the benefits of tall wood construction – from the low carbon footprint, ease of construction and reduced construction time.

“Wood products are made from renewable resources found abundantly in North America. AWC petitioned ICC for creation of the committee to research the building science of tall wood buildings, and are pleased that it is moving forward. This is an important step toward the advancement of tall wood in the United States, a carbon-sequestering alternative in construction.”
