Canfor’s Vida Group Buys Sweden Mills

Canfor Corp. executives announced in mid June that Canfor’s 70%-owned subsidiary, Vida Group, has entered into an agreement to purchase three sawmills located in Sweden from Bergs Timber for $43 million (Can.), plus working capital. The transaction is expected to close in the third quarter of 2020.

The mills, in Vimmerby, Mörlunda and Orrefors, Sweden, add approximately 215MMBF to Vida’s annual capacity. According to a company release, after the acquisition, Sweden will represent 22% of Canfor’s global operating platforms, plus 43% in British Columbia, 31% in the Southern U.S. and 4% in Alberta.

The release added that following downtime related to the coronavirus pandemic, Vida is now operating at full capacity, and Canfor’s North America sawmills are operating at almost full capacity as of June 18, 2020.

Indonesia To Keep Export License System

Backing off an earlier announcement that Indonesian wood products exporters would no longer need to obtain a license showing the wood’s origin and legality, Indonesia’s Ministry of Trade recently reversed itself after an outcry from wood products brokers. Called “v-legal” (verified legal), the license system was developed years ago after Indonesian log exports came under fire for illegal and unsustainable logging practices. Companies across Indonesia objected to the original announcement in February, claiming it would irrevocably harm exports, lock Indonesian products out of the lucrative EU market and hurt the reputation of Indonesian producers who have worked to improve forestry practices. Under a 2013 agreement, all timber products shipped from Indonesia to the EU must have the v-legal license. Trade groups in the U.S.and Australia had also questioned the announcement. Backers claimed the v-legal process is too expensive, but others noted the move would hamper furniture exports that grew by almost 15% from 2018-19.

Next Xylexpo to be held in 2022

The Board of Cepra-Centro promozionale Acimall, orgaziners of Xylexpo, speaking through its president Lorenzo Primultini, officially canceled the 2020 show on July 6, 2020.

Initially scheduled for late May in Milan, Italy, Xylexpo was first postponed to November 2020, but organizers do not see a way conditions will be favorable at that time for a large-scale event with visitors from around the world. Primultini’s letter says, “With its global scope and more than one out of three exhibitors and visitors coming from abroad, Xylexpo has an international soul and vocation that would be seriously jeopardized by sanitary and economic conditions that are still unsolved in many world regions.”

With a postponement to 2022, organizers are already working to design an Xylexpo event that takes into account new ideas and recent changes to create a new and more modern “digital oriented” showcase, deploying a strategy that will be supported with proposals and initiatives in the coming months.

Oregon Salamander Lives With Logging

Following a seven-year study of 88 timber tracts across Oregon’s western Cascade Range, researchers have concluded no “discernable difference” in populations and occupancy of a rare salamander on recently harvested stands compared to stands older than 50 years. The project, which ran from 2013-2019, was a collaboration of Oregon State University, Weyerhaeuser, Port Blakely Tree Farms, Bureau of Land Management and the Oregon Dept. of Forestry, and the findings were published in the journal Forest Ecology and Management.

Found only on the west slope of the Cascade Range, the Oregon slender salamander is considered “sensitive” by state wildlife officials, and other groups have petitioned for its listing under the Endangered Species Act. It lives primarily underground or burrowed into decaying woody material and is found on both older age class tracts and timber plantations. Researchers did note that a more commonly found salamander was negatively affected by timber harvest, and recommended that landowners leave more moisture-holding wood on the ground after logging to provide habitat for both species.

TSI Offers Dryer Replacement Plan

For many years TSI has been steadily upgrading its clients’ dryer fleets with new drums and other improvements, like flat-back elbows. The requirement is usually to fit a new drum into the same space as the existing drum and to improve both quality and productivity.

TSI’s single-pass system with its internal drum flighting is often able to deliver a significant bump in production volume (usually around 10% or more) when replacing older drums (especially triple pass design). The flighting also has the advantage that it will allow the chips or strands to classify within the drum meaning that the range of moisture tolerance of the product coming out of the drum will often see a significant improvement. Upgrades such as flat back elbows reduce pressure drop, meaning the fan will gain some extra capacity. Modular construction of the drum enables it to be delivered in sections that bolt together on site for easier access in tight “brownfield” conditions and reduced downtime for installation.

TSI can further improve the situation by adding exhaust gas recycle to the system taking spent gas from the exhaust and adding it back to the dryer inlet as blend gas. This not only increases thermal efficiency it also increases humidity which produces a better conditioning of the strand, or chip. It can help resin consumption, and will result in less absolute emissions and lower volume of gasses going to the pollution control system. If the pollution control system is a bottleneck, this can breathe new capacity into existing equipment.

With more than 60 such retrofits in the OSB industry alone this is a proven way of increasing plant productivity and product quality without a complete rework of all the existing equipment.
