      Martco Rises To The Occasion

Article by Rich Donnell, Editor-In-Chief, Panel World

When we look back at 2024, what will the panel industry say? It was okay, in spots, nothing to brag about? Before we leave it behind entirely, just to refresh your memory, here were a few of the highlights:

Hampton Lumber purchased RedBuilt from Atlas Holdings, which had formed RedBuilt with the acquisition of the commercial division of Trus Joist from Weyerhaeuser in 2009.
Walter Jarck, whose career in the forest products industry spanned 65 years, and ranged from the development of logging machinery to engineered wood products, died January 3 at age 92.
Boise Cascade announced investments in I-joist and LVL production at its Thorsby, Ala. mill, and major machinery upgrades at its plywood mill in Oakdale, La.
Dr. Werner Pankoke, who directed the growth and technology innovations of his family’s panel machinery manufacturing business, Hymmen, died at age 85.
Siempelkamp sold the once-popular KüstersPress and ContiPress technologies to Sund Fibertech.
Longtime builder and developer of OSB operations, John Godfrey, announced his plan to build an 800MMSF brownfield OSB plant in Jay, Maine.
Roseburg closed its particleboard mill in Missoula, Mont., marking the company’s exit from the particleboard manufacturing business.
The ninth Panel & Engineered Lumber International Conference & Expo (PELICE) set an attendance record from the structural and non- structural wood products sectors and featured 35 presentations and 100 exhibitors in Atlanta in mid-March.
Australian Panels ordered a new MDF plant for its Mont Gambier location.
Roseburg reported that its new MDF components plant was well into construction at Riddle, Ore., to be followed by construction of a new MDF plant in Riddle.
      ● Kronospan acquired the particleboard facility from Woodgrain in Island City, Ore.
Besse Forest Products closed several hardwood and veneer plywood plants in Wisconsin, not long after the company was purchased by the Hoffman Family of Companies.
RoyOMartin produced its first board at its new OSB plant in Corrigan, Texas, known as Corrigan II, having started up the first OSB plant in Corrigan in 2018.
U.S. wood products interests, and numerous Congressmen, voiced con- cerns about the pending EU Deforestation Regulation over possible impacts on U.S. product supply chain and timberlands management, leading to the delay of the EUDR by a year from the European Commission.
Timberlab Holdings said it was building a cross-laminated timber plant in Millersburg, Ore.
Dieffenbacher acquired longtime Italian family-owned Pagnoni Impianti.
Hexion, a producer of adhesives and performance materials solutions, acquired Smartech, known as a cutting-edge technology company at the forefront of AI- driven manufacturing solutions.
Weyerhaeuser announced its plan to invest $500 million to build a new TimberStrand engineered wood product facility near Monticello and Warren, Ark. with an annual production capacity of 10 million cubic feet, and with the goal of starting operations in 2027.

Loan Program Aims For Wood Processing Facilities To Help Reduce Wildfire Threats

U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Secretary Tom Vilsack has unveiled a new program to support American wood processing facilities.

U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Secretary Tom Vilsack has unveiled a new program to support American wood processing facilities, through a partnership with the USDA Rural Development and the USDA Forest Service to provide funding through the Timber Production Expansion Guaranteed Loan Program (TPEP). The program will support the processing and utilization of wood products from National Forest System lands to improve forest health and reduce the risk posed by wildfires, insects, and disease and the detrimental impacts they have on communities and critical infrastructure. This program is funded through President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. It also reflects the goals of the President’s Investing in America agenda to rebuild the economy from the bottom up and middle out, and to strengthen the nation’s infrastructure. Secretary Vilsack explains, “Under the leadership of the Biden-Harris Administration, USDA Rural Development is partnering with the Forest Service to support timber industry innovations that improve forest health and reduce wildfire threats while creating good-paying jobs for people in rural, forest-dependent communities.” Through TPEP, $220 million will be made available in loan guarantees for borrowers to establish, reopen, retrofit, expand, or improve wood processing facilities, sawmills and paper mills, that use trees harvested from federal or Tribal lands. The program is designed to manage up to 20 million acres of national forests managed by the FS and complement the FS’s 10-year Wildfire Crisis Strategy.

USDA Rural Development will begin accepting TPEP applications on December 26, 2024, with a maximum loan amount of $25 million. USDA encourages applicants to use the TPEP Dashboard to find areas identified as high or very high priority areas to address the risk of wildfires and insect infestations or disease, which have caused or have the potential to cause significant damage.

Applicants may learn more through the upcoming TPEP webinar, scheduled for January 6, 2025 at 1:00 p.m. ET. Visit https://www.zoomgov.com/webinar/register/WN_esofN0XPSi2AIEyt8pu74g#/registration.

Applicants are encouraged to consider projects that will advance the following key priorities: Reducing climate pollution and increasing resilience to the impacts of climate change through economic support to rural communities; ensuring all rural residents have equitable access to USDA Rural Development programs and benefits from Rural Development-funded projects; and assisting rural communities recover economically through more and better market opportunities and through improved infrastructure.

TPEP will be administered through the OneRD Guarantee Loan Initiative program, visit https://www.rd.usda.gov/onerdguarantee.

      Freres Fire Response Lawsuit Dismissed

      Freres Fire Response Lawsuit Dismissed

A federal judge has ruled against Freres Lumber Co. and subsidiary Freres Timber of Lyons, Ore., dismissing the company’s lawsuit against the U.S. Forest Service (FS) over its response to the Beachie Creek Fire in 2020. Over Labor Day weekend, the fire started on federal land and spread to private timberlands and towns along the North Santiam River east of Salem and caused five deaths and massive damage to timberlands and property.

The lawsuit, which sought $33 million in damages, alleged the Forest Service was negligent in battling the Beachie Creek Fire in the Willamette National Forest. The complaint said officials did not put their full aerial firefighting arsenal or other resources to work in the first 14 days of the fire before it spread and became part of a complex of fires in the Santiam Canyon fueled by high winds and downed power lines.

The Beachie Creek Fire eventually covered 193,000 acres, mostly in the Willamette National Forest, and destroyed dozens of homes in the towns of Detroit, Gates and Mill City. Rob Freres, President of Freres Engineered Wood (the company changed names in early 2024) and Freres Timber, said the ruling would be appealed and cited the FS’ “misconduct, negligence and failure to act” in responding to the fire and said they had brought the suit to change FS approach to wildfire fighting.

Freres said the company had lost 7,000 acres of timberland in the fire, worth $30 million, and another $3 million in timber sales that were destroyed.

      McClure Steps Down From Altec

      McClure Steps Down From Altec

      McClure Steps Down From Altec

After a remarkable 50-year career, Allan McClure has stepped down from his role as General Manager of Altec Manufacturing, effective December 31, 2024.

“Those familiar with the veneer and plywood industry know that Allan is among the best when it comes to maintaining and installing veneer lathes. Few possess his depth of knowledge and many veneer facilities have sought his advice on optimizing operations and improving efficiency,” according to a statement from Altec. “While he takes a well-deserved break to spend time with his family, fish and travel, don’t be surprised if you still see him on site, sharing his expertise.”

McClure will continue to play a key role in the company, transitioning to mentorship and consulting where he will focus on guiding the team and contributing to product development. He will remain a valuable resource, offering support in troubleshooting, sales, and customer relations.

McClure’s career started in the mills on the green end, followed by lathe service management at Calvert Engineering, and then co-partnering in the rotary veneer lathe specialist company, Feltham-McClure, before joining Altec in 2019.

      • Altec also announced David Helm as the new General Manager and assumes responsibility for day-to-day operations of the manufacturing facility in Diboll, Texas. Helm has more than 20 years of experience in the plywood industry with a background as a layup line and green end superintendent at facilities in Alabama and Texas.

“Having worked alongside Allan for more than a year in preparation for this transition, we are confident that David will be integral to the continued growth of Altec for many years to come and are thrilled to have him on our management team,” the company states.

Arauco Plans MDF to OSB Conversion

Arauco Plans MDF to OSB Conversion

Chile-based Celulosa Arauco y Constitución S.A. (Arauco) has selected Dieffenbacher to supply an OSB plant to replace an existing MDF line at its Trupan site in Cholguán in the Bío-Bío region of Chile. The plant is scheduled to start production in the second half of 2026.

“We operate eight production lines from Dieffenbacher, and they’re all running great,” says Tito Jara, Composite Panels Corporate Industrial Director at Arauco. “That’s why we chose Dieffenbacher for this brownfield project to convert our Trupan I MDF line into a state-of-the-art OSB line.”

The new plant will be built around an existing 10-opening press. The Dieffenbacher scope of supply will range from the wood yard with debarking to raw board handling including pneumatic systems and plant electrics and automation. Arauco has included a MAIER rotor debarker, an OSB disc screen and a belt dryer in the order.

The interaction of rotation, friction and surface moistening of the logs makes the fully automatic MAIER rotor debarker highly efficient. The logs are laterally fed into the trough, set into rotation by long rotors with debarking tools and moved to the discharge area by the tilt of the rotors. The OSB disc screen separates the strands into two or four fractions. In a first step, equalizing rollers spread the infeed strand-flow, pre-screen it and loosen it up. Two-disc roller decks then separate the strands according to their length.

Featuring low thermal energy consumption, Dieffenbacher’s belt dryer saves costs and supports sustainability because it works at lower temperatures than drum dryers and can use low-calorific energy from the waste heat of other plant components that would otherwise remain unused. In addition to its high capacity and variability, the belt dryer features easy and product-friendly material transport. Its self-supporting construction requires only a small footprint, and its modular design makes it adaptable to different capacity requirements and is easily expandable.
