Hall 26 will once again be home to the Wood Industry Summit during Ligna 2017 in Hannover, Germany and Hatton-Brown Publishers is once again an official partner of the event. Hatton-Brown Publishers is affiliated with Panel World, Timber Processing and Wood Bioenergy magazines.
The Summit made a very successful debut in 2015, with international customers achieving an investment volume of some €30 million. As an international meeting place for the primary industry cluster, the Wood Industry Summit features innovative solutions for harvesting and processing and for integrating the various stages of processing.
The Summit is divided into three areas: an exhibition, a forum and a matchmaking hub. Every day from Tuesday, May 23, to Friday, May 26, the forum of the Wood Industry Summit will highlight a topic of current international interest in the industry, with experts from Germany, Austria, Canada, Russia, Sweden and Spain giving presentations and fielding questions from the audience.
The main themes at the Wood Industry Summit 2017 include:
Tuesday, May 23: Forestry 4.0: Vision or Future?
Wednesday, May 24: Development and Infrastructure to Ensure Sustainable Forestry
Thursday, May 25: Forest Fires – Prevention, Detection and Firefighting
Friday, May 26: Fleet Management to Optimize the Logistics Chain from the Forest to the Factory
Exhibition stands located next to the forum will provide an ideal networking environment for exhibitors and visitors. Panel discussions, keynote speeches and the accompanying exhibition will ensure that the 2017 edition of the Wood Industry Summit is once again a major highlight in the primary processing industry’s annual calendar.
Forum participation is free of charge for visitors and delegations, and advance registration is not required.
Ligna will be held May 22-26 at the Hannover Exhibition Grounds. It’s organized by Deutsche Messe AG and German Woodworking Machinery Manufacturers’ Association.

A new bill from Congress would establish performance driven research for advancing tall wood building construction in the U.S.
The “Timber Innovation Act” would:
· Authorize the Tall Wood Building Prize Competition through the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) annually for the next five years
· Create federal grants to support state, local, university and private sector education, outreach, research and development, including education and assistance for architects and builders, that will accelerate the use of wood in tall buildings
· Authorize technical assistance for USDA, in cooperation with state foresters and state extension directors (or equivalent state officials), to implement a program of education and technical assistance for mass timber applications
Recent advances in technology, engineering and safety have made it possible to build taller wooden buildings using newly-developed mass timber products, like cross-laminated timber. In the last five years, 17 buildings between seven and 14 stories have been built using heavy timber construction globally. Canada, Norway, Australia, the United Kingdom, Italy, Sweden and France all have constructed and occupied multiple tall-wood buildings.
Other countries have already been considering wooden skyscrapers. Researchers presented the Mayor of London with plans for an 80-story wooden building just a few weeks ago.
Multiple organizations in the U.S. wood industry, including The American Wood Council (AWC), American Forest Foundation (AFF), Binational Softwood Lumber Council (BSLC) and Southeastern Lumber Manufacturers Association (SLMA), have all announced strong support for the bill.

According to estimates made by the organizer Deutsche Messe, visitor numbers at this year’s Ligna 2015 in Hannover increased to roughly 96,000, representing 7% more than those at the 2013 event. With approximately 40,000 visitors from abroad, the proportion of foreign visitors increased by roughly 2% to almost 42%. Most foreign visitors came from Austria, France, Italy, the USA, Great Britain, Russia, Belgium, Poland, Sweden, China and Brazil. The proportion of trade visitors also apparently rose by 2% compared with 2013 figures, to 96%. Deutsche Messe reports that the number of participants from Asia, at 4,700, increased over-proportionally by roughly 68%. Similar strong growth in numbers was shown by visitors from South and Central America, at 68%.
Deutsche Messe and the Wood Processing Machines Trade Association within VDMA (German Machine and Plant Construction Association) have announced a new layout concept for the next staging of Ligna from 22 to 26 May 2017. The three previously spatially separate sections “Solid Wood Processing”, “Furniture Industry” and “Crafts”, which until now dealt with final processing, will be merged in the newly created main product-range section “Tools, Machines and Plant for Custom and Series Production”.
Exhibitors focusing on “Solid Wood Processing” will in the future enjoy priority to be located in Hall 27, as a result of which suppliers will be moved closer to the “Sawmill Technology” section in Hall 25. The associated section “Wood Construction” in Hall 13 will also then be situated in the immediate vicinity. The organizers expect this change to generate synergies between the sections “Surface Processing” in Hall 17 and “Wood Based Panels” in Hall 26. With its own focus in Hall 16, Automation Engineering is to be given greater weight in future.
