From: Panel World Staff

Allyn Ford, CEO and president of Oregon-based Roseburg Forest Products, announced that the Ford Family and the Roseburg Board of Directors have chosen Grady Mulbery to assume the role of Roseburg President effective January 1. Ford will continue in his role as CEO until January 2017, when he will retire, at which point Mulbery will assume the joint role of CEO and president. Ford will continue as Chairman of the Board for Roseburg after stepping out of the company’s top executive role.

“I am pleased to say that we have selected an internal candidate to first step into the president’s role then move into the CEO role when I retire from that position,” Ford says. “Grady has demonstrated his readiness and willingness to lead our organization, and this not only provides a strong sense of security, but also one of continuity in pursuing our vision and living our values as a company.”

Mulbery joined Roseburg in early 2011 as vice president of Composites Manufacturing and later became vice president of Manufacturing. He has led Roseburg’s production operations since 2012. Prior to becoming part of Roseburg’s Executive Team, he was director of Manufacturing for SierraPine.

“I am humbled and excited by the opportunity to move into this new role with Roseburg, and I am committed to continuing the pursuit of growth and stability that Allyn has led for the past several years,” Mulbery says. “We have a strongly dedicated Executive Team and organizational leadership that shares in the vision that we have set for the company and a Board led by Allyn that also is committed to Roseburg’s ongoing development.”

Ford has been CEO/president of Roseburg Forest Products since 1997, after overseeing the company’s timberlands for several years. He succeeded his father, the legendary, late Kenneth Ford, who started the company in 1936.

Today Roseburg owns more than 630,000 acres of timberland in the Western U.S. It operates a sawmill in Dillard, Ore.; three plywood facilities in Dillard, Coquille and Riddle, Ore.; softwood veneer facility in Weed, Calif.; eningeered wood products facility in Riddle; four particleboard facilities in Dillard, Missoula, Mont.; Taylorsville, Miss.; and Simsboro, La.; MDF facility in Medford, Ore.; four decorative thermally fused laminate panel facilities in Oxford, Miss; Missoula, Simsboro and Dillard; two pre-finished panel facilities in Dillard and Missoula; two panel cut-to-size facilities in Oxford and Dillard; a wood chip export terminal in North Bend, Ore. The company employs more than 3,000. It has already announced plans to move headquarters from Dillard to Springfield, Ore. later next year.

Arauco Announces $325 Million Investment For New Particleboard Mill

Today, ARAUCO North America announced plans to build a new particleboard mill located in Grayling, Michigan, to produce 424 million ft2 (750,000m3)/year of panels, along with full lamination capabilities to support the Prism TFL decorative surfacing program.

This $325 million investment will be the single largest continuous particleboard press in North America, and one of the highest capacity presses in the world. Ground-breaking is estimated for late 2016, with the rollout of the first panel during the latter part of 2018.

This investment will generate approximately 250 direct permanent jobs, and is expected to yield important economic and community development benefits to the Crawford County region. The addition of panel capacity to this geographical area will improve customer access to a stable, cost-efficient supply of high quality particleboard and decorative panel products. The location of this plant will also complement the supply of MDF from our neighboring mill in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.

Together with the ARAUCO North American Executive Management Team, Kelly Shotbolt remarks, “There is no better way to signal the commitment we have to the renewal and modernization of the North American composite panel industry. Our objective with this investment,” Mr. Shotbolt adds, “is to improve the logistics of our entire manufacturing footprint, and support the growth of our customers in the Mid-Western Region.”

This process innovation is a first for North America and will allow Uniboard to better service our customer base in Canada and the United States. The Mont-Laurier MDF/HDF plant produces Excel+, Excel, and NU Green/PMDI-NAF and HDF panel products. Uniboard’s overall network of particleboard, MDF and thermally fused laminate facilities are at locations in Sayabec, Val-d’Or, Laval and Mont-Laurier, Quebec.

Overall Uniboard has an installed capacity of over 640 million square feet of raw particleboard, high-density and medium-density fiberboard, of which over 50% is converted into value-added thermally fused laminate and laminate flooring products. Uniboard Announces Capital Investment At Quebec Plant

Uniboard is proud to announce an investment of over $29 million at its Sayabec plant. Two major investments being announced today at Sayabec are an innovative wood fiber mat-preheating unit to expand capacity in particleboard line 2, as well as a new short-cycle thermally fused laminate press adding capacity for high-end surface structures and finishes.

Both investments will allow Uniboard to increase productivity and improve its product offering and service to our customer base in Canada and the United States. The announced investments will be implemented in early 2016. The particleboard investment will continue to position the Uniboard Sayabec facility as one of North America’s preferred particleboard producers while the thermally fused laminate investment further confirms Uniboard’s leadership and innovation position in the North American laminate arena. Both investments will strengthen Uniboard’s overall network of particleboard, MDF and thermally fused laminate facilities that are located in Sayabec, Val-d’Or, Mont-Laurier and Laval, Quebec. Uniboard employs a skilled workforce of 380 at its Sayabec site and over 800 people within the entire corporation.

B.C. Particleboard Plant Revamps For Pellet Production

A Northern Engineered Wood Products (NEWPRO) particleboard facility is filing a permit amendment to become a wood pellet manufacturing plant. Particleboard production has been halted at the Smithers, BC, plant since January 2014.

Although not typically required when reducing emissions, a full consultation report will be submitted to the Ministry of Environment Aug. 3, said Rebecca Martin of SLR Consulting, who is overseeing work on the plant. News reports of the application say it shows the switch will result in 94 percent decrease in total particulate matter, from 432 to 26 tons per year. Modeling was done to predict the emissions levels.

Martin said NEWPRO’s use of the best available control technology will make the facility a new provincial standard for wood pellet plants. Among the upgrades to be made are state-of-the-art dryers.

When it reopens, the plant will bring an estimated 30 full time jobs, and 10 contractual jobs to the area, Martin added.
