Huber Engineered Woods Strikes Production Deal With Arbec Forest Products
Huber Engineered Woods, Charlotte, N.C., will increase production capacity through a contractual manufacturing agreement with Arbec Forest Products. The deal allows Huber to produce its ZIP System sheathing at Arbec’s Quebec, Canada, facility.
“We have seen a strong start to 2016 in our industry and are optimistic for continued growth in the coming years,” said Huber Engineered Woods president Brian Carlson. “We are making arrangements to augment capacity as part of our ongoing commitment to keep pace with the growing needs of our customers for AdvanTech and ZIP System products.”
All specialty products manufactured under the agreement between HEW and Arbec will be stamped and sold under the Huber brand.
Arbec’s mills have an annual production capacity of softwood lumber of 700 million bd. ft. and OSB panels of 620,000 cubic sq. ft.

Norbord Inc. recently announced that its OSB mill in High Level, Alberta resumed production over the weekend following a fire that occurred on May 4th.
As previously reported, in the afternoon of May 4th, a fire broke out in the mill yard which, as a result of the hot, dry, windy weather conditions in northern Alberta , quickly spread to the log storage area outside the plant. As a precaution, Norbord immediately suspended production at the mill. Shipping from finished goods inventory resumed the weekend of May 6th.
The High Level, Alberta mill has a stated annual production capacity of 860 million square feet (3/8-inch basis) and has been ramping up towards full production since resuming operations in late 2013. High Level is located approximately 720 kilometers northwest of Edmonton and 400 kilometers west of Fort McMurray.

With housing starts growing in both single-family and multifamily categories, lumber suppliers are looking to advance their product lines beyond the commodity mindset to help builders resolve more challenges. They also point to the many intangibles provided by suppliers that provide values beyond the initial price when considering options for dimensional lumber, OSB, plywood and structural panels.
“The trend we’re seeing with OSB panels is a move to enhance products in different ways,” says George Hendry, market development manager at Weyerhaeuser. “Builders are struggling with reduced levels of skilled labor, so they’re looking at enhanced panels to help them find ways to make products easier and faster to install. They want attributes that will enhance performance in the field.”
Adds Ray Peters, vice president of marketing at RoyOMartin, “Our new products are aimed at finding ways to decommoditize OSB and excel at all three factors that drive purchase decisions: price, quality and delivery. We want to stand out in that equation.”
Reducing processes and steps for installation has become a priority as builders face new challenges. “One headwind we face today is the shortage of skilled labor in many markets,” says Mary Jo Nyblad, commodity sales and marketing director at Boise Cascade. “Finding, training and retaining qualified employees at all levels of our industry will continue to be a challenge. We as an industry have done a poor job of marketing ourselves. We’re a well-kept secret, especially for young people. It’s a big blind spot.”
A prime focus for adding value has been protecting panels against moisture during the construction process and afterward, helping overcome issues with less efficient crews and eliminating the need for adding housewrap in a separate step. “Products that provide wet-weather protection are popular, as are those that need less sanding and prep time for framers and floor installers,” notes Weyerhaeuser’s Hendry.

Norbord To Invest $135 Million In Scotland OSB Mill
Canadian firm Norbord has announced plans to invest £95m at its wood panels plant in the Highlands. It aims to double production at its base in Dalcross, near Inverness, to meet rising demand. Highlands and Islands Enterprise has also offered an £11m grant towards the proposed expansion. The factory produces oriented strand boards (OSB) which are used in the construction industry.
Alex Paterson, chief executive of Highlands and Islands Enterprise said: “We have been working very closely with Norbord on their development plans and are delighted to be supporting the company to invest so substantially in its Highland base.
“This development will put Norbord’s Inverness plant on a sustainable footing for decades to come, and is a huge vote of confidence in the company’s Scottish workforce.
“It’s worth noting that the positive impact of today’s announcement will be felt well beyond Inverness and the Inner Moray Firth. “Norbord is not only a significant local employer in its own right, it also plays an important strategic role in the region’s forestry sector and is a major user of haulage companies and port infrastructure.”

Norbord Inc. recently announced that the Quebec Minister of Forests, Wildlife and Parks has terminated the wood license associated with its curtailed Val-d’Or, Quebec OSB mill. Production at the Val-d’Or mill was indefinitely suspended in 2012 following persistently weak North American housing market conditions and lower demand for OSB. This development is not expected to have any impact on the company’s financial results.
“This is disappointing news, but in the bigger picture, we firmly believe that our Val-d’Or mill is the best alternative for the aspen pulpwood in that region,” said Peter Wijnbergen, Norbord’s President and CEO. “Unfortunately, market conditions do not yet justify a restart at Val-d’Or, but we are exploring options for the mill and are committed to a restart once market conditions are supportive. The Ministry has confirmed we can reapply for a wood license when we are ready to restart the mill.”
Norbord is the world’s largest OSB producer and continues to operate in the Abitibi region at its La Sarre, Quebec OSB mill. Since 2012, the company has invested and committed capital in excess of US$35 million to optimize that mill’s capacity and ensure its long-term competitiveness.
