ARAUCO announced it is closing its medium density fiberboard (MDF) production facility in Eugene, Ore. as of May 1. ARAUCO states it will continue to support customers from its other facilities, and that the decision was based on an assessment over several years that the older manufacturing platform was less competitive compared to the company’s other more advanced MDF platforms.

“Decisions regarding plant closures are difficult,” says Pablo Franzini, president of ARAUCO North America. “We are working diligently to provide options for Eugene employees to help them through a difficult transition. We are committed to meeting our customers’ needs from our other facilities.”

A month earlier ARAUCO announced it is closing its particleboard line in Moncure, NC Carolina as of April. It cited similar reasons.

ARAUCO’s Moncure MDF line will be integrated with a molding line to create an advanced MDF millwork operation that will drive efficiencies and support the company’s commitment to provide customers with value-added products. “The new investment will strengthen our millwork footprint to better serve our customers,” Franzini says.

Boise Cascade Acquires Tennessee Distributor

Boise Cascade Company is acquiring Lumberman`s Wholesale Distributors, a Nashville, Tenn.-based distributor of engineered wood products, commodity lumber items, and specialty building materials. The acquisition is expected to be complete in the coming weeks. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“We are very pleased to welcome the Lumberman`s associates to Boise Cascade. They have been an excellent distributor for nearly 50 years,” said Nick Stokes, executive VP of Boise Cascade Building Materials Division. “This location will allow us to strengthen our nationwide presence and satisfy a growing demand for our products and services in the Tennessee Valley and Central Kentucky markets.”

Founded in 1969, Lumberman’s supplies pro dealers, millwork houses, and manufacturers. “We are excited to join Boise Cascade,” said Garey Keltner, president, Lumberman`s Wholesale. “We believe there is a strong cultural and strategic fit that will allow us to grow and continue to serve our customers.”

Last month Boise Cascade reported fourth quarter 2017 net sales of just over $1 billion, up 19% from fourth quarter 2016 net sales of $919 million. For the full year, the engineered wood products and building products supplier reported sales of $4.43 billion, a 13% increase from sales of $3.91 billion in 2016.

The Boise, Idaho-based company also recently reported a fourth quarter net income of $19.1 million, soaring well above a fourth quarter 2016 net income of $4 million. For the full year Boise Cascade reported a net income of $83 million, increasing 117% from a net income of $38.3 million in 2016.

Madison College Hosts Veneering And Laminating Seminar

A record number of guests attended the latest seminar offered by the Cabinetmaking & Millwork program at Madison College. “Interest in our seminars continues to grow” stated Program Director Patrick Molzahn. “This time we had 61 people, and there were several on our waiting list who did not get to attend”.

The seminar featured five speakers. Margaret Fisher (Lange Bros.) opened the day-long event with a presentation on how veneer is produced and issues which arise from improper specification and production. The group was then divided into two smaller groups. Margaret’s next session offered hands-on practice identifying and creating veneer matches. Each participant created their own sketch face with veneer provided by Saunders Wood Specialties.

Peter Van Dyke (Stiles Machinery) discussed best methods for processing and sanding veneer in the most efficient manner, including examples of state of the art machinery for working with veneer. Following Peter’s presentation, attendees were treated to lunch provided by the AWI-Wisconsin chapter. Madison College students had the opportunity to socialize with many of the employers present.

The afternoon was dedicated to adhesives and pressing. Josh Bartlett (Applied Adhesives) gave an overview of the different adhesive products available for veneering, and problems that can arise when they are not used correctly. Black Bros. shipped in a 24” roll coater for the seminar so we could conduct a demonstration of applying adhesive and pressing a panel. Todd Phalen and Ed Strahota demonstrated the roll coater and discussed different types of presses available for veneering and laminating.
