New Company May Finally Give Relevance To Old Scrimber Technology Using Bamboo

 

A bamboo engineered building product called GRASSBuilt is being manufactured at a small plant in Meridian, Miss. The patented technology, owned by TimTek, LLC and licensed to GRASSBuilt LLC, involves merging long strands, called scrim, coating with adhesives and steam–pressing to produce bamboo billets, which are further processed for various end-uses.

“Applying the TimTek process to bamboo has really proven to be the perfect marriage,” says Nicholas Wight, vice president of GRASSBuilt. “The process results in what can be described as ‘super bamboo,’ and is extraordinary as a base building material for superstructures, flooring, cabinetry, furniture and a host of other possibilities.”

The company reports that its aim is to shift the dynamic of nearly 90% of all bamboo products in the world being exported from Asia, with China alone accounting for 65% of world exports.

Creating a fully integrated and diverse bamboo economy in North America is the vision of GRASSBuilt founding partner, Sean Hemmings. “I’ve been involved in the bamboo trade for over eight years,” Hemmings says. “Worldwide, bamboo represents a $30 billion industry for China alone. There’s no reason the United States can’t become a vital part of the global bamboo equation and foster our own bamboo-based economy right here in America—especially since the U.S. and EU represent 78% of total end-user consumption of the bamboo-based products currently available.”

Hemmings’ plan centers on sourcing species of bamboo from Mexico and the United States. The Meridian plant currently procures its bamboo from Mexico, where prior to shipping to the U.S. the bamboo is pre-processed, which involves splitting the bamboo culm (stem) apart and planing the inside and outside surfaces to remove the natural waxy substance that won’t bind to adhesive. Another pre-processing step is heating the material in an autoclave with no oxygen in order to carbonize the fiber (a form of thermal modification).

Once the bamboo slats arrive in Meridian they’re run through a scrimming (crushing) mill, coated with adhesives and steam-pressed. The Meridian mill is building inventory of the billets to fulfill orders. It reportedly has had some installations, such as for flooring in Florida, and at Mississippi State University where cut-up billets have been installed as paneling.

“Many Eastern economies, including China, focus on employing as many people as possible,” Hemmings says. “At GRASSBuilt, we look forward to creating new jobs, but also to infusing our innovative, new technology into the equation of bamboo building materials.”

Hemmings adds that GRASSBuilt’s proprietary method of processing bamboo coupled with the plant’s inherent sustainable attributes make bamboo a premier building material for any project that desires to maximize its USGB, and LEED opportunities.

“GRASSBuilt products meet or exceed the most stringent of federal and state regulations for sustainable building initiatives,” Hemmings says. “The same cannot be said for much of the imported bamboo materials. At GRASSBuilt we’re 100% committed to being as sustainable and reliable as possible, and 100% transparent with our materials’ eco-quotient and consumer protection regulations.”

Hemming says bamboo has harvesting rotations of four to six years with certain types growing 2-3 ft. per day. He believes the finished engineered building material will compete in some structural applications, as well as many if not all decorative applications, and find applications in the furniture market.

Increasing sustainability regulations in the construction market, a desire to lessen dependence on imported goods and materials (particularly from China), and the manufacturing trend of bringing manufacturing jobs back to the United States after decades of outsourcing all combine to produce a new supply chain economy, according to Hemmings, which he refers to as the “Bam-Boom.”

“I’m not aware of any other U.S. manufacturing firm which is beating China at its own game,” Hemmings adds.

The TimTek manufacturing process stems from a product called Scrimber that was started in Australia in the mid 1970s. The manufacturing process was that pine or other species logs in small diameters would run through a scrimming machine where the log was crushed to form a mat of interconnected long strands, followed by drying, adhesives application, layup and compression, steam pressing, cutting-to-size and finishing.

In 2000 a forest products industry veteran and former long-time Georgia-Pacific corporate director of forest resources, Walter Jarck, spearheaded the formation of TimTek and gained exclusive rights to Scrimber research and technology.

But the technology or product has never found commercial success with wood species. The small Meridian manufacturing plant exists because a previous venture there had a license agreement with TimTek and planned to use wood, but the last recession killed that project.

Reportedly, a plan to build a manufacturing facility in Canada, possibly Quebec, and also using wood, had significant private and government investment behind it but fell through only a couple of years ago.

Mass Timber: From ‘What The Heck Is That?’ To ‘Wow!’

Mass timber is sprouting up in cities in North America and abroad. After years of feasibility studies and design proposals, buildings six stories or taller constructed primarily from pre-engineered wood products are being considered in cities around the world.

In London, one proposal, called the Splinter, would rise to 100 stories. In Chicago, Perkins+Will (in collaboration with Thornton Tomasetti and the University of Cambridge) has designed an 80-story high-rise with 300 duplex apartments. If built, River Beech—a key component of P+W’s master plan for the Riverline development—would be made almost entirely from mass timber.

So-called “plyscrapers” are still a tiny sliver of nonresidential construction. In the past five years, only 17 buildings seven stories or taller have been completed worldwide, mostly in Europe and Canada. Six more have started construction, according to the American Wood Council.

Mass production of timber for high-rise construction is still in its infancy in North America. Specifying these products in the U.S. faces resistance from insurers, regulators, and code officials. Steel fabricators and concrete suppliers disparage mass timber for taller buildings on the grounds of safety and durability.

Proponents cite the speed at which tall buildings can be constructed using pre-engineered wood and mass timber’s ability to sequester carbon. Joey-Michelle Hutchison, RA, LEED AP BD+C, CSBA, Associate Vice Principal, CallisonRTKL, says, “The role of mass wood is going to grow because of the demand for sustainable design.” Researchers from Yale and the University of Washington, in a study published in the Journal of Sustainable Forestry (March 28, 2014), postulated that using wood substitutes for constructing buildings (and bridges) could save 14–31% of global CO2 emissions.

Tallest Wooden Tower In The World Is Almost Complete

Say what you will about wooden construction, it is sustainable. So it’s great that even large structures are now being built out of wood. One awesome example of this type of architecture is Brock Commons, a University of British Columbia student housing tower. It will rise to an impressive 174 ft (53 m) and will be the tallest wooden residential tower in the world once it is complete. Which it very nearly is.

It took just 66 days to build the wooden tower. It’s not quite finished yet though, but once complete it will contain 33 four-bed rooms, and 272 studios, so the 18-floor tower will be able to accommodate 404 residents. The tower was designed by Acton Ostry Architects.

The structure consists of 16 floors of five-ply cross laminated timber (CLT) floor panels, and has a steel-framed roof, as well as a few concrete sections, namely the base and stairwells. The façade of the tower is made of prefabricated panels that had the windows pre-installed. These panels contain 70 percent wood-based fibers with steel stud framed sections, and form a high-pressure laminate cladding.

The construction went remarkably quickly. At first they managed to build one floor per week, but were able to go faster after that, building two or more floors per week. Not including the concrete sections, they’ve been able to complete the entire structure in just over three months, which given the size of the tower is quite remarkable.

The Brock Commons residence was also designed according to LEED Gold certification standards, and will receive this certification once it is completed. They estimate that it will be completed in May, 2017, which is four months ahead of schedule. They are currently installing the steel roof, which they hope to complete in a couple of weeks.

Timber’s Transformation: An Old Building Material Is Reborn

We ask: If the 19th century modern building material technology was associated with steel and the 20th century with concrete, could the 21st be the century of “MCT,” mass construction timber? Wood, one of the world’s oldest (and greenest) building materials, was the de facto construction material in American cities for over two centuries, falling out of favor when non-combustible materials capable of building high and wide emerged.

Today, highly engineered timber, sized to compete with these structural systems, is making a comeback in Europe, especially in Germany and in Austria, where the world’s first 8-story “ply-scraper” was recently completed. Stateside, the Boston Society of Architects recently featured Urban Timber, an exhibit showcasing innovative developments in wood technology and construction, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture is sponsoring a $2M ideas competition for the design of tall wood buildings. Given all of this hoopla, one could assume that we are on the verge of a global timber revolution, yet the U.S. is lagging far behind our European neighbors. In fact, to date, neither the U.S. nor Canadian building codes explicitly recognize mass timber structural systems.

Deeply committed to sustainability, we made the choice to dive feet first into connecting with the past to build the future by employing MCT for the primary structural system of our University of Massachusetts Amherst Design Building. Designed with Equilibrium Consultants, one of the world’s foremost timber engineers, the building will house the university’s Departments of Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Regional Planning, and Building Construction Technology, and is now under construction. Permitted through a variance application using the “alternative” method provisions of the building code, our 87,000-square-foot building furthers the university’s educational mission by incorporating examples of the inherent departments’ design practices. Targeting LEED Gold, it will be among the first MCT structures in the region when completed in 2017.

Laminated technologies, first developed in Europe in the 1980s, are allowing us to fabricate fairly massive timber components for the Design Building using small diameter trees sustainably harvested from managed forests. Our selected timber, black spruce, was sourced from Canada’s Boreal forest region, an area that constitutes the world’s largest land based biome. It is constituted to stand up to fire and maintain its structural integrity.
