Structural EWP Exempt From New EPA Formaldehyde Regulations

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) new federal formaldehyde emissions regulations took effect on June 1st, 2018. As of this date all composite wood products must be certified as compliant with these regulations.The EPA defines composite wood products here as both domestic and imported particleboard, medium density fiberboard (MDF), and hardwood (decorative) plywood.

Structural engineered wood products made for construction applications are exempt from this regulation, including structural plywood, oriented strand board (OSB), wood I-joists, laminated veneer lumber, and glued-laminated timber. All of these products are manufactured with low-emitting, moisture-resistant adhesives in accordance with existing product standards and building codes, according to The Engineered Wood Association (APA).

For quick reference, structural engineered wood products marked with the APA Mark of Quality are considered exempt from the new regulations. If unmarked products from APA member mills are sold into applications that do not require a certification mark, the product invoice and an APA certificate of conformance can be used to identify the product as exempt.

The Formaldehyde Standards for Composite Wood Products Act was signed by President Barack Obama on July 7th, 2010, based on the Air Toxic Control Measure developed by the California Air Resources Board (CARB). The first phase of regulation rollout, now in effect, allows for compliance with either the CARB ATCM Phase II or the U.S. EPA TSCA Title VI. Starting March 22nd, 2019, only the U.S. EPA TSCA Title VI will be permitted as a path to compliance.

Weyerhaeuser Posts Growth From Wood Products

Weyerhaeuser has announced that its Wood Products division ended the fourth quarter of 2017 with much better revenues and earnings than one year earlier. Average sales prices had increased in all product segments, with the highest growth rate of almost a third reported for OSB. Sales volumes, which include amounts purchased through the Distribution division, improved for the most part. Softwood plywood (-15.9%) and MDF (-22.4%) were the only products to see lower sales. The division’s consolidated revenues thus rose 19.0% to US$1.228bn.

EBITDA adjusted for extraordinary items from OSB activities leapt to US$104m. The division as a whole saw its EBITDA adjusted for extraordinary items almost double to US$258m. As in the two previous quarters, operating income was hit by high costs for the remediation of defective I-joists and ended up at US$180m. The company created reserves of US$50m to resolve this issue in the fourth quarter. These reserves now add up to US$290m. Weyerhaeuser reported that remediation work had been completed in 99% of affected new buildings by the end of January.

Roseburg Names Odom Business Manager For Plywood And Lumber

Roseburg Forest Products has announced that Phil Odom has been named business manager for the company’s plywood and lumber business, a newly created role that consolidates the reporting structure of plywood and lumber sales organization. Reporting to Odom are the central planning manager, the plywood field sales team, and sales managers for lumber, softwood plywood, and hardwood plywood.

Odom has had experience at BlueLinx Corporation where he served as vice president of national business development, and at Georgia-Pacific. At both companies, Odom managed sales, distribution, manufacturing, and operations teams. Bringing a breadth of experience in organizational leadership and team development to the role, Odom has developed national sales strategies and built out new channels, markets, and product lines.

Odom holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration and marketing from Georgia Southern University. He has served as a board member of the Construction Suppliers Association and as an active member of both the North American Wholesale Lumber Association and the National Lumber and Building Material Dealers Association.

Founded in 1936, Roseburg Forest Products is a privately owned company and a producer of particleboard, medium density fiberboard, and thermally fused laminates. Roseburg also manufactures softwood and hardwood plywood, lumber, LVL, and I-joists. The company owns and sustainably manages more than 600,000 acres of timberland in Oregon, North Carolina, and Virginia, as well as an export wood chip terminal facility in Coos Bay, Oregon.

Engineered Lumber Has Replaced Natural Lumber In Key Building Components

Building a house, garage or even a shed today isn’t as easy as going to the local lumberyard and buying whatever dimension of wood you need. A lot of emphasis goes into the grade of the wood and its stress and load ratings, according to Everett Brands, manager of Arrow Building Center in Glencoe. Arrow took over the former Fullerton Lumber Center on Desoto Avenue this past October.

Today, main structural pieces, such as headers, consist of LVL, or laminated veneer lumber, an engineered product typically of poplar, fir or pine. It is laminated under heat and pressure with a moisture-resistant resin and it’s stronger than typical native wood. Building codes call for the use of specific lumber grades for specific applications.

“Anything longer than six feet as a header has to be LVL,” Brands said. The LVL products range up to 36 or 48 feet long. While regular lumber could sag or bow under extreme weight, the LVL won’t. Thus LVL is typically used over windows and entries, especially with tall entries.

“We use a lot of engineered products — beams, headers and I-joists,” added Matt Smieja, manager of Simonson Lumber, just outside Hutchinson along State Highway 7 East.

Years ago, when forests were being cut for the first time, the wood tended to be of higher quality as far as grain and knots. But new stands of trees generated are of a lower grade.

APA Releases 2016 Structural Panel & Engineered Wood Yearbook

The 2016 Structural Panel & Engineered Wood Yearbook has been released by APA – The Engineered Wood Association. The yearbook includes an analysis of the U.S., Canadian, and global economies, focusing on factors that impact demand for engineered wood products across several market segments as a basis for forecasting expected production of engineered wood products over the next five years. Besides the analysis and forecast, the yearbook also includes historical data on engineered wood production. Topics examined in the yearbook include:

Driven by healthy employment gains over the last three years, annual household growth in the U.S. is back to the 1.2 million level, with demand for new housing units also back to the 1.5–1.6 million unit level. Buoyed by low interest rates, which are expected to remain below 4 percent for most of 2016, construction of new single-family homes in the first quarter of 2016 was up almost 5 percent from the pace of the fourth quarter of 2015, the highest quarterly starts rate since the fourth quarter of 2007. While demand is high in the U.S., the primary concern for the rest of 2016 and for the next several years is the ability of the supply-side forces to respond to this improvement. Home builders report that factors including a lack of developed lots and the shortage of skilled construction labor have combined to constrain their ability to respond to the increased demand for housing. Eventually these constraints will lessen; housing starts are projected to return to approximately 1.5 million units by decade’s end, with a concurrent growth in engineered wood products output ranging from 19–28 percent during this period.
