China Firm Orders Straw-Based Particleboard Plant From Dieffenbacher

For the fourth time in four years, Chinese straw-based particleboard specialist Wanhua Ecoboard has ordered a straw-based particleboard plant from Dieffenbacher. The greenfield project at the Tonglin site in the Anhui province is scheduled to start production in December.

Highlighting the order is a 28m long CPS+ continuous press, the first of Dieffenbacher’s new generation of continuous press to be delivered in China. Equipment for flaking, including three MRZ 1500 knife ring flakers with the FlowOptmizer material feeder, were also ordered along with a dryer, forming station and forming line.

“To meet our commitment to produce environmentally friendly, formaldehyde-free panels made of wood and straw, we continue to rely on Dieffenbacher as one of our most important partners,” says Wanhua CEO Zhao Zhimei.

Dieffenbacher and Wanhua have also agreed on the delivery of two additional plants, numbers five and six. Again, a CPS+ will be used for both projects. Commissioning of these plants is planned for 2019.

Columbia Forest Products Calls For Entries In 2016 PureBond Quality Awards

HGTV carpentry expert Chip Wade is among judges for the 5th annual PureBond Quality Awards competition, which is accepting entries July 15, 2016.

Columbia Forest Products annual PureBond Quality Awards competition focuses on the use of PureBond formaldehyde-free hardwood plywood in woodworking projects.

To be considered for judging, each project submission must contain formaldehyde-free PureBond hardwood plywood in the construction. The winning selections will be made based on the “quality” use of PureBond hardwood plywood in a project, and must be among the 900-plus PureBond Fabricator Network members.

Users of PureBond hardwood plywood in their practice may join the PFN now and become eligible to submit entries before the competition’s deadline. Up to nine winners will be chosen by a team of expert judges covering three project categories: Residential Kitchen, Residential Other, and Commercial.

The PureBond Quality Awards are open to Columbia’s PureBond Fabricator Network (PFN) members.

Appalachian Hardwood Manufacturers Tout Formaldehyde-Free Solid Wood

Appalachian Hardwood Manufacturers, Inc. (AHMI), promoting the advantages of formaldehyde-free real, solid wood to public, are contrasting its natural qualities with the unsafe laminate flooring that had gotten Lumber Liquidators into trouble with consumers.

“Discount flooring companies selling imported laminate floors have been providing customers with products that can carry seven to twenty times the base amount of carcinogenic formaldehyde allowed by the EPA,” says the AHMI. “At these levels, formaldehyde secretes from the flooring and into the home’s air, becoming a high-level health risk, especially for children and pets who are most susceptible to its effects. Carcinogenic formaldehyde found in artificial wood has been linked to lung and nasal cancer, nausea, asthma, and other severe respiratory issues.”

Wood industry trade groups, including furniture and cabinetry makers, have been trying to separate their goods from the products made in China that contained high levels of formaldehyde. The Kitchen Cabinet Makers Association issued a statement last week saying that there is no risk of exposure to formaldehyde in cabinets that receive its Environmental Stewardship Program seal, because its program requires that engineered wood used in it must be CARB Compliant.

Other groups have questioned the validity of testing methods used to detect formaldehyde in wood products – such as flooring sold by online retailer Wayfair – tests that deconstruct the multi-layered sandwich that makes up laminate flooring. The Hardwood Plywood and Veneer Association estimates that “finishes of paint, lacquer, sealants, laminate, plastic or other material” reduce formaldehyde emissions of the underlying raw board by 90 percent.
