Oregon’s Rosboro Announces Sale Of Wood Products Plants

 

Wood products manufacturer Rosboro of Springfield on Tuesday announced that it has sold its manufacturing business to Wynnchurch Capital, an Illinois-based investment firm. The sale for an undisclosed amount involves seven manufacturing plants in Oregon, including Rosboro’s main facility at South 28th and Main streets in Springfield.

Wynnchurch Capital, based in Rosemont, Ill., describes itself as a “value-oriented, operationally focused private equity firm that specializes in complex transactions in the U.S. and Canada.”

Last month, Rosboro announced that it had sold its 95,000 acres of timberlands to an investment group managed by Campbell Global, a Portland-based investment firm. Rosboro also declined to disclose the sale price of that deal. Wynnchurch Capital owns 19 companies, according to its website, including manufacturing, building materials and transportation firms.

In a joint press release with Rosboro, Wynnchurch Partner Ian Kirson said, “We are excited to partner with the management team of Rosboro to continue the company’s track record of customer service, quality and innovation. Rosboro has a bright future, and we look forward to supporting the company’s growth.”

Louisiana-Pacific Announces Mill Exchange To Increase Siding Capacity

Louisiana-Pacific Corporation (LP) recently announced that it has reached an agreement with Norbord Inc. to exchange OSB mills in Quebec, Canada. LP will swap ownership of its Chambord, Quebec, mill for Norbord’s Val-d’Or, Quebec, mill. The asset exchange is expected to be complete in early November 2016.

This transaction, along with the recent acquisition of a former OSB site in Cook, Minnesota, is part of LP’s strategy to increase siding capacity, an area of the business that has delivered consistent sales growth over the past decade.

“The Canadian mill exchange, coupled with the recent Minnesota acquisition, provides us flexibility and increases our ability to optimize our capacity for sustained business growth,” LP Chief Executive Officer Curt Stevens said.

“We have seen tremendous growth in our siding business and anticipate this growth to continue as we look to meet increasing demand,” he said. “The aim of these transactions is to provide additional siding capacity by the end of 2018.”

LP’s immediate priority will be to conduct a detailed evaluation of the Cook site and Val-d’Or mill. The assessment will determine the operational feasibility, including access to timely and adequate wood supply, the work required to convert the sites into fully operational siding mills, as well as conversion costs and annual operating expenses.

World’s Tallest Timber Building Topped Off Ahead Of Schedule

In Vancouver, Canada, the towering timber Brock Commons just had its final panel installed, making the dream of the world’s tallest timber building a reality, reports the website Inhabitat.

In just 66 days – ahead of the original scheduled timeframe – the exterior of the Acton Ostry Architects‘ record-breaking design has come to fruition, which could bump up the projected fall 2017 completion date to next year’s spring semester. The final panel of the University of British Columbia student housing structure was lifted and installed earlier this month.

John Metras, managing director of UBC Infrastructure, said, “Construction just went really smoothly. It was well designed and the construction sequence went smoothly.”

Construction began last November, followed by the erection of the building’s freestanding concrete cores earlier this year.

To ease fire safety fears of an 18-story timber structure, Brock Commons is outfitted with a sprinkler system and the wood is encapsulated in drywall and concrete. The lighter weight of the building also allows for better energy dissipation during an earthquake, making it proficient at withstanding all kinds of disasters. Students will be able to move in next year, quite possibly in the spring semester.

Louisiana-Pacific Building New Minnesota Plant

The months-long mystery behind which home siding company would be receiving a $66 million subsidy package from the state has finally been made public. Louisiana-Pacific will construct a $440 million plant in Hoyt Lakes. This is the Nashville-based company’s second operation in the state (the other being in Two Harbors).

The Hoyt Lakes site will employ 250 people, amounting to roughly $264,000 in state funding per job created. The Duluth News Tribune notes that many of those employees will be loggers and felled tree transporters, a group of workers that has struggled to find employment following years of board plant closures and layoffs at paper mills in the area.

The new plant will also source its wood products from Minnesota. LP is currently estimating its take to be 800,000 cords per year (one cord equals 128 cubic feet of wood) or about 200 logging trucks each day.

Minnesota lawmakers began developing the public financing package for LP earlier in the year. Senator David Tomassoni, DFL-Chisholm, previously said at least Michigan and Canada were vying for the LP plant as well.

Funding for the project comes from a number of sources. The Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development will be kicking in $20 million from its 21st Century Minerals fund, while the Iron Range Resources and Rehabilitation Board will be contributing $16 million from its economic development trust fund. The final $30 million will come from state taxpayers in a 10-part, $3 million per year deal.

Huber Engineered Woods Strikes Production Deal With Arbec Forest Products

 

Huber Engineered Woods, Charlotte, N.C., will increase production capacity through a contractual manufacturing agreement with Arbec Forest Products. The deal allows Huber to produce its ZIP System sheathing at Arbec’s Quebec, Canada, facility.

“We have seen a strong start to 2016 in our industry and are optimistic for continued growth in the coming years,” said Huber Engineered Woods president Brian Carlson. “We are making arrangements to augment capacity as part of our ongoing commitment to keep pace with the growing needs of our customers for AdvanTech and ZIP System products.”

All specialty products manufactured under the agreement between HEW and Arbec will be stamped and sold under the Huber brand.

Arbec’s mills have an annual production capacity of softwood lumber of 700 million bd. ft. and OSB panels of 620,000 cubic sq. ft.
