    BACK TO THE FUTURE

Article by Rich Donnell, Editor-In-Chief, Panel World

Like the photo shown here, the Ligna show held May 26-30 in Hannover, Germany went by like a blur. All of the anticipation, the planning, the traveling, and then as quick as the snap of a finger, it’s over. Next thing you know you’re on the plane headed back home, trying to sort out all of the information your brain consumed during the week, and wondering how the heck you forgot to stop by to see this company or that company. Where’s Artificial Intelligence when you need it?

As with all Ligna’s past, a theme emerged out of Ligna 2025, and that was the enhancement of—or the introduction of—technologies and equipment. Ligna has always been a launching pad of course, but it came on like gangbusters at this particular Ligna, and much of it was slanted toward AI.

While the 50th Ligna by no means occurred during a robust global marketplace, it was obvious that panel machinery and technology suppliers had not been sitting on their laurels since the previous Ligna. There was almost a sense of, wood products producers having to run a little faster to catch up to the technologies—like kids in a candy store.

In addition to the soft economy that has existed in Europe for a while, the Trump factor (and tariffs) had some equipment companies on edge, and perhaps some orders on hold, but at the same time the feeling persisted that it could get better in a hurry—alas several U.S.-based wood producer companies sent representatives on scouting missions.

This issue devotes numerous pages to many of the exhibitors and how their week at Ligna went for them. Apologies to those companies not included, but time is actually short at Ligna (don’t worry, I’m not advocating a return to a six-day Ligna. To the younger people, yes it was that way once).

There were many highlights to be found as we combed the aisles, as you’ll read about in this issue’s wrap-up article. But one of them had nothing to do with new technology or project orders. It had to do with identity.

Siempelkamp, long a Ligna mainstay, revealed a new logo, going from this:

Siempelkamp had introduced the older logo at Ligna in 1989, borrowing the octagonal shape from its first trademark in 1924.

The new logo represents a stronger identity for Siempelkamp, and complements the re-naming of several (former) technology brands within the group to come under the Siempelkamp name.

Real simplicity amid the artificial intelligence.

Dürr Sells Environmental Tech Business To Stellex Capital

Dürr Sells Environmental Tech Business To Stellex Capital

Dürr AG has concluded an agreement with an affiliate of Stellex Capital Management LLC (“Stellex”) on the sale of its environmental technology business, which includes the areas of exhaust air purification technology and sound insulation systems and forms the Clean Technology Systems Environmental division within the Dürr Group.

With this sale, the mechanical and plant engineering firm is completing the simplification of the Group structure announced a year ago, underlining its strategic focus on the automation of production processes. At the same time, the Group retains a re-investment in environmental technology amounting to approximately 25%. The enterprise value of the environmental technology business is approximately €385 million. After deducting the costs for acquiring the reinvestment and other transaction-related costs, the Dürr Group expects net proceeds from the sale of around €250 million, which will be used to strengthen the Group by reducing debt. The transaction is subject to standard approvals and expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2025.

Under Stellex’s ownership, the environmental technology business is well positioned to expand its leadership, benefitting from resources to support the expected growth. In 2024, environmental technology generated sales of €407 million and employed around 1,300 people, including around 450 in Germany. The head office is located in Bietigheim-Bissingen and the business operates in 16 locations across 12 countries worldwide.

Dr. Sebastian Baumann, Head of the Clean Technology Systems Environmental division at Dürr comments, “We can look back on a successful development in the environmental technology business and are convinced that we can develop our potential even better as an independent company. With Stellex at our side, new opportunities for growth and innovation are opening up, both in our established business areas and in pioneering technology areas such as carbon capture and heat storage.”

In mid-2024, Dürr had announced the assessment of strategic options for the environmental technology business, including a possible sale. With this sale Dürr will have three divisions, instead of five, having completed the sale of the Danish filling technology company Agramkow last year. The company is now focusing consistently on its core business with automated and sustainable production technologies. In addition, business with the automotive industry was bundled into the new automotive division at the beginning of 2025.

Kadant Carmanah, Hexion Announce Collaborative Partnership

As a manufacturer of stranding equipment used in the production of oriented strandboard (OSB) panels, Kadant Carmanah views its collaborative partnership with Hexion and the integration of Hexion’s Smartech artificial intelligence (AI) technology as a natural evolution of its flagship “SmartRING” strander product line and Argus smart-connected technologies platform. According to Todd Macey, president of Kadant Carmanah Design, combining Hexion’s world-class AI-driven autonomous manufacturing solutions with Kadant Carmanah’s expertise in stranding equipment will enable OSB manufacturers to produce higher quality strands, enhance strander performance, and reduce unplanned downtime.

Hexion’s Smartech division, which Hexion acquired in 2024, uses AI to improve the manufacturing process for wood panels. The product line includes software and systems solutions such as SmartPress and recently announced SmartQuality, each providing a unique approach to resin application that increases efficiency and product quality, as well as autonomous manufacturing systems, which utilize machine learning to optimize productivity.

“The benefit of this collaborative partnership for OSB producers will be the full visibility and connectivity they will now have throughout their entire manufacturing process—from the strander, to the dryer, to the blender, to the forming line, to the press,” says Michael Lefenfeld, President and CEO, Hexion. “As OSB mills continue to face labor challenges and the high variability of log inventory management, Hexion’s advanced AI and machine learning technology will help stabilize the quality of strands from the strander.”

    Jeremy Goebel Named Con-Vey President

Con-Vey in Roseburg, Ore. appointed Jeremy Goebel as its new President, effective as of June 1. The Board of Directors voted unanimously to promote Goebel and name him as the fourth President in the company’s 79-year history. He succeeds Dave Larecy, who will remain actively involved as CEO of Con-Vey Holding Inc.

Goebel’s promotion marks a significant transition for Con-Vey, as he assumes responsibility for the operations of the company. Over the last decade, Goebel has steadily taken on increasing responsibility and played a key role in Con-Vey’s growth and evolution.

“Jeremy has earned the trust of our customers, our team, and our leadership through consistent performance, smart decisions, and a deep understanding of our business,” Larecy says. “He’s been instrumental in building our sales team, expanding our equipment lifecycle service offerings, and driving integrated solutions that have opened up new revenue streams. I have every confidence that he’ll continue to lead Con-Vey with integrity, insight, and care.”

Goebel began his career at Con-Vey in 2013 in Sales, was promoted to sales manager in 2017, and became vice president in  2023. He oversaw Sales, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, and Equipment Lifecycle departments. In his new role as President, he will also assume responsibility for Manufacturing, Purchasing, and Planning. His leadership in developing subcontractor-integrated packages and partnership with long-term customers has helped fuel substantial revenue growth and enabled reinvestment into company infrastructure and capabilities.

Reflecting on his new role, Goebel shares: “I am honored and humbled to step into the role of President at Con-Vey. It’s a privilege to serve alongside such a dedicated and capable team. I’m incredibly grateful for the trust placed in me and excited to build on our momentum as we continue to grow with purpose and deliver on our mission of velocity.”

Larecy notes that Goebel has had the support of an extraordinary team and a loving family, especially his wife, Shirah. “This job isn’t easy; it comes with pressure, unpredictability, and plenty of hard decisions,” Larecy says. “But Jeremy’s commitment to our people, our customers, and our mission makes me excited about Con-Vey’s next chapter.”
