MDF Shipments Rose Last Year

North American composite panel shipments for all three product categories totaled 5.473MMSF for 2011, an increase of nearly 1% over 2010, according to Composite Panel Assn. Particleboard and MDF shipments experienced a positive second half of the year, consistently outperforming the last six months of 2010.

MDF shipments rose 2.1% totaling 1.874MMSF for the year over 2010. Particleboard shipments were 3.172MMSF, a less than a 1% drop from 2010. Hardboard and engineered wood siding and trim shipments were down 3.3% for the year.

Following a series of performance tests, Ameresco, Inc. has received its Final Acceptance Certificate from the U.S.  Dept. of Energy Savannah River Operations Office for the now operational DOE Savannah River Site (SRS) Biomass Cogeneration Facility (BCF).

The 20 MW facility is on schedule to provide the necessary process steam to the site as well as provide 30% of power for the site once fully operational in 2012.

The facility will convert 325,000 tons of fuel per year, including local forest residue and wood chips.

Weyerhaeuser Co. has sold its hardwood lumber business, Northwest Hardwoods, to American Industrial Partners (AIP), which will operate the business as Northwest Hardwoods, Inc., headquartered in Tacoma, Wash.

T.J. Rosengarth, most recently the COO of Flakeboard and a long-time officer for companies in the composite panel industry, becomes CEO of Northwest Hardwoods, Inc.

Northwest Hardwoods, Inc., with approximately 1,000 employees, sells hardwood lumber through its seven primary sawmills, four concentration yards, four remanufacturing plants and one merchandising log yard, all in the U.S.

American Industrial Partners is a private equity firm.

In the largest ever study of fuel treatment effectiveness, U.S. Forest Service researchers have found that intense thinning treatments that leave between 50 and 100 trees per acre are the most effective in reducing the probability of crown fires in the dry forests of the Western U.S.
